Blog # 4

I attended my internship Monday morning bright and early at eight am, like usual. We discussed upcoming events going on with the service line and then Gloria gave me a couple of tasks to do for the rest of the day. The first one was to call the Temple Baptist Church to get a hold of a man named Tom Porter. The church holds events on Saturday night where guest speakers come and speak. Gloria said that Dr. Smith and Dr. Sonsor would each like to attend and be guest speakers. Dr. Sonsor wanted to talk about back pains and Dr. Smith wanted to talk about the surgical intervention with back pains. Gloria wanted me to call and see if we could get a scheduled date somewhere towards the end of April beginning of March. I called the church, but Tom Porter was not there, and the woman on the phone said he wouldn’t be in for a couple more days but she would relay the message. Once I was to get the go ahead from Tom Porter I was to call Dr. Smith and Dr. Sonsors office and schedule the event, but there was nothing else I could do right then for that. Gloria also gave me a business plan to read over and critique, make changes on, give my opinion, etc, anything that I could do to help make the business plan better. I was really nervous about this because I had never done a business plan before. I read the business plan over and over again just trying to understand it. I spent the whole day reading and making changes that I thought were appropriate. I went back to Gloria’s office and she said I could work on it the rest of the day from home, but we discussed The Day of Dance coming up on Saturday and what we needed to do to get ready for it. She asked me to attend a meeting on Wednesday that explained what we needed to do to get ready for the event and she couldn’t make it, so we agreed I would be there Wednesday. The Wednesday meeting ended up getting cancelled so I was to meet with Gloria at the event at 10:30 am on Saturday, it was scheduled to start at eleven and end at three. I was there at 10:30 like she asked at it was absolutely freezing, windy, and cold. It was a horrible day for the event, especially one that had dancers from all over coming to dance in the weather that we had. We set up our HMI booth, Dr. Sonsor (Physiatrist) and Dr. Allota (Sports Medicine) were there as well to help answer any questions that people attending might have. The dancers on stage were awesome until the rain started to pick up! Then a group of girls went on to perform, and they were fairly young, and one of the girls slipped and fell right on her face, she was such a trooper she got right back up and finished the dance before she ran off stage hurt and upset. The rest of that dance company did not want to continue in the weather. The event was pushed up to end at two. Needless to say it was a pretty bad turn out and miserable for me to work, but the dancers that I did see were amazing on stage.

I got to the hospital at 8:00 am, Gloria was in a Rehab meeting, and the meeting was very important and had to do with the transition from the old rehab company to the new one. She met up with me and unlocked her office for me at around 8:30. I was told to use her office to do some research on different event we could do to promote the different service lines. I researched different things we could do and also looked into the day of dance, an event coming up on the 27th. Gloria was in the meeting for a few hours. We met up in the cafeteria for lunch and talked about the ideas that I had. We also discussed the survey, I told her that I made the changes and asked were we should go from here. She said that she wanted to contact someone about the E-weekly that is sent out to all of the Parrish employees. She called her and we emailed her the link to the survey. We discussed the Day of Dance and that there would be a booth set up for the HMI Program and that I could get some hours in that day as well. We discussed things going on and attended a couple meetings and before we knew it the day was over. I met up with Gloria and the Spine Team and told them were we were with the survey and told them I would present them with the results the next time we meet. The meeting went pretty well everything was going on track pretty good. After the meeting Gloria asked me if I would like to be a part of the 60 medical seconds, which is a video that the hospital does, she said I would get to know the marketing and production side of the hospital. I agreed and thought that would be a great idea and I was very interested. She also said that there was a big gold event coming up in March and asked if I would like to attend and help out with it. I agreed and she said we would talk more about it later.

Due to my absence this past week at Parrish Medical Center it is a little difficult to update you on what I have been up to. As I have posted I was working on a survey through surveymonkey.com, an awesome survey source I might add, for the Aging Workforce Conference that I am helping put together. I finished the survey and emailed Gloria with the survey for her to look over and make sure that everything was okay to be sent out. I wasn’t getting feedback as quick as I would have liked, which is fine because Gloria is a very busy woman. I thought that it should be sent out as quickly as possible before the next Spine Meeting, so I decided to turn it in to HR to be sent out to the PMC staff. I emailed it to the Human Resources Department for Roberta Childwin, the head of the department, to send it out to all Parrish Medical Employees. I received an automatic response from Roberta’s office say that she was out of town and it would be sometime before I received a response. I called Gloria a couple days later telling her that I had sent it to Roberta and asked if everything was ok, she told me that there was a few things that she would like me to change and that Roberta would be out of town for a little while to finish making the changes and resend it to her and Roberta. The changes were minor grammar things, nothing huge. I made the adjusted changes and email it again. I am looking forward to going back to the hospital tomorrow to see where we go from here. Not being at the hospital for a week has me feeling a little left out like I don’t know everything that is going on and I look forward to getting back out track.

I am currently doing an internship at Parrish Medical Center in Titusville, FL. I am shadowing a woman named Gloria Barone she is the Service Line Coordinator for the hospital. I was very nervous at the beginning of the internship but I now look forward to showing up every Monday and learning new things throughout the week. The service line I chose to be a part of is called Muscuskeletal Program or HMI (Human Motion Institute), this program has to do with the care and support of spine, bone, muscle and joints. There are alot of people that are part of the team that include doctors and administrators. I usually attend meetings in the morning on Mondays with different department heads in the hospital. Gloria set this up to help me get a feel of the different departments and ask any questions that I may have that can help me further my career in the future. I then take the afternoon to work on some task given to me by Gloria. I attend numerous meetings every other Wednesday that pertain to The Human Motion Institute or any of the other service. I enjoy learning more about Gloria’s job every week, she is a very important person, and plays many roles in the hospital. I am currently planning a conference called "The Aging Workforce"; this conference is going to be done to give back to the workers for PMC. It is a good way to give them help with back, muscle, or joint pains and it gives them an opportunity to meet with our doctors and get to know them. It is very good for people to get to know the new doctors we bring into PMC and what they do. Nurses and administrators can use this for personal reasons or it can be a good use for patient referrals. I really enjoy being a part of this team and it is very interesting to me.
I am keeping a log of every meeting I have and anything that I do for this internship. I think this will be very interesting to read at the end of the course and I looking forward to publishing it in my portfolio. I think it will be useful to me if I ever want to look back on my experience at Parrish.
The only thing that I find kind of disappointing is that I really looked forward to hopefully getting some kind of job offer or help getting into an entry level position, but so far from my time being here it seems almost impossible. I think the main reason is because it is such a small community hospital and there isn’t that much available and when a position does become available they want someone very experienced to do the job.
I look forward to seeing what the rest of the semester hold for me and I will be blogging about my experience the whole way through.
