I had planned an event for Dr. Smith to speak at called Prime Timers at Temple Baptist church. Prime Timers is a social group held by the church were a lot of elderly people attend and have different guest speakers, talk about events, and have lunch. Prime Timers is a really cute thing for the elderly community to get out of the house and be social with other elderly couples. Dr. Smith was going to give a speech about head injuries and what it does to the body, how it could affect you, and what you should do if an injury like that were to occur. I believe the speech went very well and the people got really involved in the conversation. I the turn out for this event was pretty good, I would say about 200 people attended. I believe this was a good way to promote Dr. Smith’s name and to get him to know the community a little more. Five of us from Parrish attended the event including Dr. Smith, Leanne from HR, Tara from physical therapy, another woman I’ve never met before, me, and dr. smith. We handed out notepads, pens, questionnaires, and there were door prizes that we brought with were little organizers and such. Everyone attending something like this could not turn away free goodies, who would? Towards the end I felt a little awkward, although I am spiritual in my own way I do not choose to express it to everyone, the singing for hours was a little boring. The part for Parrish went very well and I really think we should use it in the future as an opportunity for more doctors for our facility to get to know the community a little better.

My career experience with my internship. I attend meetings every week for HMI, as you know. The doctors that I represent are Dr. Allotta (Sports Medicine), Dr. Sonsor (Physiatry), and Dr. Smith (Neurosurgery). I happen to be searching for jobs at PMC were I am taking my internship and came across an Office Manager position for Port St. John facility, which is were I live so I thought that was cool. I clicked on the job to look more into it and it says Muscular Skeletal Program which is another name for Human Motion Institute so I am wandering if it is for the doctors that I represent and see in meetings everyweek. I email HR asking them if it is for Dr. Smith, Dr. Sonsor, or Dr. Smith are the doctors that I will be office manager for and she replied saying that they were. I am completely stoked about this job thinking, “hey maybe I have a chance because I do see them and I do know a little bit more about the muscular skeletal program than other”. I put in my application and brought it up to Gloria to see if there was anything that she could do to help me out. We all started talking at a meeting and she said she would email them putting in a good word for me. I thought that I was in there, it made me think that I could really possibly get this job. Everyone at Parrish was kind of making me happy saying I could still attend meetings and be involved with HMI and that it would be even better because I would know the schedules of the docs and it would help out a lot at meetings. A couple days later I receive an email from Parrish sayin, “Thank you for submitting you’re application for the Office Manager position. Please not the number of factors when considering an application for employment. Due to the number of applications we have receieved we will not be moving forward with your application. Etc.”. This email completely bummed me out. I didn’t really receive any explanation of why my application would not be considered because I think of myself as more than qualified enough for the position. Although I was very upset I considered this a learning experience, something better will come in the future, and I wasn’t ment to have this position. I attended an event a couple days later and Dr. Smith was there and I was telling him how I applied for that position and he said that they were having a really hard time finding someone, I was a little confused by that because the email made it sound like they had numerous people lined up and I wasn’t good enough for the position. That also got me thinking I might email human resources and ask them why I did not qualify for the position but Im not sure if I should be so pushy or if doing that would be a good idea. I think that if anything I got out of this internship is definitely a learning experience of the process you go through trying to do different things at a hospital.

I arrived for the first meeting of the day (Rehab Meeting) at 8:00 am at the port St. John Parrish facility. Parrish has recently transitioned into a whole new company for rehab care and the new director of rehab was introduced at the meeting, his name was Christopher Mcalpen. I really enjoyed meeting Parrish, he was very down to earth, and seemed to care a lot about his job and what he can do for Parrish. We discussed things that needed to be done with the new rehab team and the first thing discussed was strategic planning, putting together a new business plan for rehab. We discussed new expenses, old expenses, the cost of equipment vs. lost in revenue, etc. We discussed the new equipment that was needed for rehab, what facility it was going to, and the brand or type of equipment needed to be ordered. There is a high need for staff in rehab and needed at minimum is two Physical Therapists. We went over the job description for those, the interview, and hiring process.
The next meeting started at 9:00 am (The Spine Team Meeting) , one of my favorite meetings to attend. We talked about the Life Spine program that we wanted to incorporate in the Human Motion Institute and when we could start the certification for it and when it could be finished. I think the goal that we all set on was July. We went over all of the Community Outreach events coming up. We changed some dates around with them; we decided the Aging Workforce Conference should be pushed to August so that we could incorporate the life spine at the event. We would then do a separate workforce conference at Port Saint John facility in September that would be open to the public. We have an event called Prime Timers coming up on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, that Dr. Smith will be speaking at and we had the slides and conversation to be spoken in line.
I then attended lunch with Gloria and went over the things discussed in the meetings and where and when I would be attending the events. The next important meeting of the day was at 1:00 pm (Physician Referral Source Integration). This meeting is important because we discuss all the events put together for promotion of the physicians and for Parrish in general. The rest of the meetings of the day were a repetition of discussions from the meetings in the morning getting processed throughout the rest of the hospital. The day went pretty well overall and my next meeting with Gloria was at the Prime Timers event on Tuesday.

A couple different things have happened since the last time I have updated on my internship. I attended a Health Fair at the Great Outdoors; the Great Outdoors is a golf/ retirement community. Parrish Medical Center was set up under a tent promoting our doctors. I don’t think we had a lot of traffic by our tent but its always good to attend events whenever you can to get your name out there. The Health Fair overall was pretty fun. The retirement community that resides in the great outdoors is a really fun and outgoing group of people. They looked like they were having a blast; I only hope to be that happy at that age. We stayed there for a couple hours in the morning and were out of there by noon. The following week we had a PALs (Police Athletic League) Gold Tournament to attend, I had a blast chatting with these people and trying to promote the HMI Program at Parrish. It was me, Gloria, Tara (Physician Liaison), and Tammy (Physical Therapist). We used a white board and were testing the guys grips throughout the day and posting there age and how good there grip was for there age. The results of doing this were amazing! There was an 88 year old man with 10X of a better grip then the younger guys. This was a fun way to get the guys to come over and for us to strike up conversation on who we are and what we do. This past week I met up with Gloria in her office at 8AM we discussed upcoming events and what our discussions would be next week at the meetings and what we needed to do to get some things done. Then Leanne, a woman from HR who helps get our notes and meetings put together, arrived for a meeting with us to go over the notes and discussion for next week as well. We want to start getting The Aging Workforce Conference on a role for July. One of my responsibilities was to get a hold of Alex Gutierrez in the education department to see if we can set a date were all of the conference rooms would be available. After we got all of the notes and discussion figured out for the meetings next week Gloria asked me to work on making a job description for hiring a new physical therapist. I spent the rest of the afternoon researching degrees and certifications needed to be a physical therapist, what the job responsibilities are, and how the therapist should spend its time by percentage for Parrish. I presented the finished job description to Gloria and she said she was very proud of it and we would bring it to the meeting next week to go over it with the physician and critique anything that needed to be changed. The day went by pretty quickly and I am ready for meetings next week to get some things that much closer to being accomplished.
